22-carat gold proof bimetallic design Two Pound coin from The Royal Mint, issued to celebrate an important technological anniversary. On 12 December 1901, Italian physicist and radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi made the first successful wireless transmission across the Atlantic Ocean from Cornwall to Newfoundland. Before this, many scientists had thought that transmissions longer than 200 miles were impossible. Marconi, who had moved to England the decade before, was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1909. This 2001 commemorative coin features a design by Robert Evans showing radio waves spreading across the surface. When Evans created this coin he was a senior member of The Royal Mint's design team. The Morse code for 'S' has been incorporated into the design - this was the original signal sent in 1901. The edge inscription honours Marconi's achievement, reading '··· WIRELESS BRIDGES THE ATLANTIC ··· MARCONI 1901'. The obverse of this coin shows Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Struck in 15.97 grams of 916.7 gold, this pre-owned Two Pound coin has a bimetallic appearance, achieved with a ring of red-gold to the outer edge with yellow-gold to the inner circle. Just 2,500 of these gold proof 2001 Marconi coins were issued and ours are offered in the original case of issue.
