Limited edition gold proof millennium Five Pound coin from The Royal Mint, dated 1999. The Royal Mint released a selection of commemorative £5 Crowns to celebrate entering the third millennium AD. These collectors coins feature a clock-inspired design to the reverse, created by Jeffrey Matthews. A tiny map of the United Kingdom is carefully positioned so the hands of the clock - poised between 1999 and 2000 - align with the Prime Meridian, also known as the Greenwich Meridian, named for the Royal Observatory at Greenwich in London. The edge of this coin reads 'WHAT'S PAST IS PROLOGUE', a line taken from Shakespeare's The Tempest. The obverse of this pre-owned 22-carat gold coin features Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the fourth such definitive effigy used on Her Majesty's British currency. Weighing in at 39.94 grams, this Royal Mint coin has a fine proof finish. It is offered in its original presentation box with a numbered certificate of authenticity. The certificate confirms that just 2,500 of these coins were authorised for issue. Please note that this is the 1999-dated edition, rather than the 2000-dated piece issued the following year which is otherwise identical.

Royal Mint Millennium Coins

The UK's national mint released a range of Five Pound coins to celebrate the millennium. These can be found dated both 1999 and 2000 though in other respects the design is the same.

Royal Mint millennium range coins feature Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to the obverse while the reverse shows a design by Jeffrey Matthews. This takes the form of a clock with both hands between 1999 and 2000. The hand marks the Greenwich Meridian across a map of the United Kingdom. With the words 'ANNO DOMINI' below.

These obverse and reverse designs are used on 1999 and 2000-dated coins from this range, including:

The 2000-dated brilliant uncirculated coin was also available for visitors to strike themselves at the Millennium Dome.
