Buy a 1997 Four-Coin Gold Proof Sovereign Elizabeth II Set

Four-coin official Royal Mint gold proof Sovereign collection for 1997, in its original presentation case. This set contains a Half Sovereign, a 'full' Sovereign, a Two Pound coin and a Five Sovereign piece, all struck in 22-carat gold. The £2 or Double Sovereign is the first to bear the classic technology-themed design, created for the circulating bimetallic Two Pound coins that would be issued in the following year. The other coins in the series feature the classic St George and the dragon motif on the reverse, paired with Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the last time that this effigy was used on British Sovereigns. Just 860 of these sets were issued in 1997, and this pre-owned example comes in the original display case with a certificate of authenticity.

1997 4-Coin Proof Sovereign Set

This premium 1997 four-coin Sovereign set features the following gold proof UK coins:

Also included is a 1997-dated gold-plated Sovereign medal.

New Bi-Metallic Technology £2

This set includes a commemorative Two Pound coin featuring Bruce Rushin's new definitive reverse design. The coin's bimetallic appearance is created by combining red and yellow gold alloys.

Queen Elizabeth II Obverse Portrait

These coins are some of the last to feature Raphael Maklouf's third definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The following year, this was replaced with a new portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley. The inscription reads 'ELIZABETH II DEI · GRA · REG · F · D' or similar.

Benedetto Pistrucci's St George

Benedetto Pistrucci's classic Saint George and the dragon design features on the reverse of the three Sovereigns in this set. Designed in 1817, this engraving has become a hallmark of the gold Sovereign series.

Gold Proof British Sovereigns

The coins in this set are struck to historic specifications in solid 22-carat gold with a proof finish. In total, these coins weigh 67.89 grams, which equates to an actual gold weight of 62.23 grams or just over two troy ounces.

Mintage: 1997 Four Sovereign Set

The Royal Mint authorised the release of 1,000 gold proof four-coin Sovereign sets in 1997, but records indicate that only 860 such sets were issued, making surviving complete sets in good condition highly sought after.
