Royal Mint proof Half Sovereign from a limited edition presentation of just 2,910 coins issued in 1993. This highly-collectible 22-carat gold coin comes in its original presentation box with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed. Proof Half Sovereigns like this one boast a finer finish than their bullion counterparts, achieved with multiple strikes from dies hand-prepared by the Mint’s craftsmen. Its the finish, the limited edition status and the long history of these coins that makes them sought-after by collectors. They were first minted in 1817, taking their name from an even older Tudor coin. The first Georgian Half Sovereigns featured a distinctive reverse, showing England’s patron saint, St George, in the act of slaying a dragon from horseback. It’s this same motif by Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci that appears on this 1993 coin, just as beautiful as it was two centuries ago. The obverse shows Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the third such definitive portrait used on her coinage since her accession to the throne. These two timeless engravings are struck on a 3.99 gram 91.67% pure flan meaning these coins have an actual gold weight of 3.66 grams or 0.1177 troy ounces. VAT and Capital Gains Tax exemptions make this proof Half Sovereign makes an excellent addition to any collection.
