£595.00
Gold Half Guinea of George III dated 1804. The obverse shows the seventh type laureate bust of the king, facing right. He has short hair and wears a crown of laurels. The legend reads ‘GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA’. The reverse features a shield of royal arms - the arms of Hanover inestucheon - with a crown above, surrounded by a garter motif. The date appears below, divided by the tail of the garter. The garter reads ‘HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE’ and the legend around reads ‘BRITANNIARUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR’. This reverse design was introduced to the Half Guinea in 1801, replacing the the spade shaped shield and the earlier ornate shield. It would be the last design used for the Half Guinea which fell out of use after the 1813 issue and was officially removed from British currency in 1816 alongside the ‘full’ and Third Guinea. This coin weighs 4.18 grams and has a diameter of 20.8 millimetres. Grade: AVF - Some minor wear on high areas and very minor nicks and scratches, an attractive coin in the hand with some lustre between lettering - approaching Very Fine. Spink 3737.
