£1,300.00
A collectable gold full Guinea of King George the Second, dated 1731. The obverse features the second, narrower type young laureate head of George II, facing left, engraved by John Sigismund Tanner. The reverse shows an ornate crowned quartered shield of arms, bearing the arms of England and Scotland (united since 1707), France, Hanover and Ireland. George II was the second British monarch of the House of Hanover. This type of Guinea reverse was introduced during his reign to discourage Shillings from being gilded to pass as Guineas. The value of a guinea had fluctuated over the years but became officially fixed at 21 shillings in 1717, the year Great Britain adopted the gold standard.
