A collectable gold hammered Quarter Noble of king Edward the Third, struck in London between 1361 and 1369. These years - between the Treaty of Brétigny and the breakdown of relations with the king of France - saw English coins minted in Calais though this example was struck in London. The obverse shows a central spade-shaped shield of royal arms within a double tressure of eight arcs, the points terminating in lis. Cross potent mintmark, class recognisable by the annulet before Edward and a barred ‘R’ in ‘GRA’. The reverse shows a tiny central lis within a very ornate cross, terminating in more decorative lis, with lions in the angles, all enclosed in another double tressure. These gold quarter nobles come in many varieties making them a fascinating gold hammered series to collect, especially as they’re available at affordable prices. Spink 1511, Schneider 91, North 1244.
