Rare Big Five five-coin Natura set with mint marked 1oz 24-carat gold proof South African coins dated 1994 to 1998. In this collection you’ll find a 1994 Lion, a 1995 Rhino, a 1996 Elephant, a 1997 Buffalo and a 1998 Leopard, all with special one-year-only mintmarks. The sought-after Natura range was introduced by the South African Mint in 1994 with the first edition - the Lion - struck at the Pretoria Mint (hence the ‘PTA Zoo’ mintmark). These coins feature capitivating engravings of some of South Africa’s most famous wildlife, including the the so-called Big Five. The term comes from the world of big-game hunters who considered it a great achievement to bring home these African animals. Today, you’re more likely to hear the term used by tourists, looking to see elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and buffalos on wildlife safari. This set lets you bag all five. Each piece, presented in an individual capsule, is struck in one ounce of .9999 fine gold with an attractive proof finish. This coins boast mirrored surfaces and designs by top artists, showing these majestic creatures on both obverse and reverse, along with the date and composition. We’re supplying this set in an attractive wooden presentation case with four of the five numbered certificates of authenticity, displaying the very limited mintages on these 1990s Naturas.

Specification

Each coin is struck in 31.10 grams of 24-carat gold with a fine, proof finish. Diameters: 32.69 millimetres. Actual gold weight of the coins in the set: five troy ounces or 155.52 grams.

Presentation

Five gold proof coins in individual capsules inside a bespoke wooden case. Numbered certificates of authenticity from the SA Mint present for all coins excepting the 1994 Lion.

What Are South African Naturas?

The Natura collection from the South African Mint that celebrates South Africa's rich wildlife and natural history. Introduced in 1994, these coins feature designs from top SA coin artists on both obverse and reverse, featuring lions, leopards, lynx, elephants, rhinos, cheetah, buffalo and more. They're available individually and in presentation sets, both in very limited numbers

The series was the first from the SA Mint to be struck in 24-carat (99.99%) fine gold. The famous Krugerrand, by contrast, is composed of 22-carat gold. These proof coins have been offered in four different sizes: 1oz, 1/2oz. 1/4oz and 1/10oz. 999 silver Naturas were introduced in 2019.

In recent years the Natura range has expanded to take in extinct animals with a palaeontology-themed collection featuring dinosaurs and our ancient hominid ancestors, attracting a new audience of collectors to this exciting series.

Very easy to use website I think you enter the website and there's the latest "live metal prices" with an "Enter Search Item" bar at the top of the page. I like the fact it has the search feature as the home page. When you search for the item(s) it quickly shows the results, along with images of the coins or coin sets. I like that, too. The only downside with these types of businesses, is that you can't get to see a close up image of the coin and/or coin set you are buying. I feel that, because this company buys coins from collectors, etc. that they will have several items that are the same, but in varying degrees of quality and condition, and then, when your buying a 2nd hand item, it's going to be a case of pot luck on what you're going to get. And so, if it was possible, I'd love for BCC to get images of each item that you're going to buy. This is so you know what you're getting before you buy it. That said, every item I've bought from BCC has been of a very nice quality. Two of the coins were of a staggering high quality and the two sets I bought were much better than the average coin sets from eBay. I would say that BCC are the best company in the UK when it comes to used and brand new coins and coin sets. Not only that, the speed at which they get your order processed and delivered to your door is very very fast. The packaging is also on point and highly professional. Also, and one of the most important things, I really trust the Britannia Coin Company. Their prices are very fair and their items are clean and in good condition. They also have a good standing within the coin community.
