A remarkable silver proof Five Pound set, issued to mark one hundred years since the beginning of World War One. This 2014 set looks back on the first year of the conflict with designs exploring important themes by a range of experienced artists. It’s a collaboration between The Royal Mint and the Imperial War Museum. Most of these coins were only issued in sets like this one - you can’t find them available individually. Each of the coins is composed of 28.28 grams of .925 sterling silver and has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. They’re all finished to proof standard. The obverses of each pice show Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty the Queen (the final year that this effigy was used) but the moving reverses differ. Included are designs commemorating Britain’s first black officer, Walter Tull (engraving by David Cornell), the British Expeditionary Force (John Bergdahl) and the role of the Royal Navy (David Rowlands). Also included are silver Crown coins featuring the Howitzer (Edwina Ellis), the Home Front (David Rowlands) and a design exploring the importance of propaganda (David Lawrence). Its a beautiful set and one of just 1,914 issued by The Royal Mint. It’s offered in its original black velvet lined presentation box with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed.
