Set of four 22 carat gold Two Pound coins, issued by The Royal Mint to celebrate the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The XVII Commonwealth Games were held in Manchester, England in the summer of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee year. As Head of the Commonwealth of Nations, Her Majesty opened the Games, kicking off an unprecedented programme of events with 73 national teams competing across 17 sports. Brits remember Manchester 2002 for the world records set at venues in and around the city by UK athletes but Australia topped the medal table when the Games closed in August. This set commemorates the legacy of the Games with four editions of the special Two Pound coin, designed by artist and sculptor Matthew Bonaccorsi, a member of the Mint's engraving team. These limited edition coins - each struck in 15.98 grams of 916.7 gold - feature a running figure, holding a rippling banner. The coins are distinguished by national flags, positioned behind the figure, representing the participating UK teams: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They feature a yellow gold inner ring and a red gold outer ring, mimicking the appearance of circulating £2 pieces. The obverses all shows Ian Rank-Broadly's portrait of The Queen. Just 500 of these sets were issued in 2002 and this one comes in its original red leather box of issue with an information booklet and a certificate of authenticity enclosed. An excellent sporting gift and an important addition to a serious Two Pound collection.
