Seven coin 1996 silver proof set, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Decimal Day. On 15th February 1971, history was made when UK's coinage officially shifted from a 'centuries-old money' system of Pounds, Shillings and Pence (d), to a new decimal currency where the pound was divided into 100 (new) Pence (p). A quarter of a century on, The Royal Mint celebrated this momentous moment in the history of British money with a collectible set, featuring .925 sterling silver versions of the UK’s decimal coinage. 15,000 of these sets were issued. They include a One Pound coin, a Fifty pence, a Twenty pence, a Ten Pence, a Five Pence, a Two Pence and a Penny. All bear Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to the obverse. This portrait was used on UK coins from 1985 until 1996. The majority of the designs featured on the reverse of these coins are the work of Christopher Ironside, including the classic image of Britannia that appears on the 50p. The £1 coin features a Celtic cross and was designed by Norman Sillman. The 20p with the crowned Tudor rose is the work of William Gardner whose design was used from 1982 until 2008. All seven coins are enclosed in a single, clear, double-sided case, allowing them to be appreciated without direct handling. This is enclosed within a maroon velvet presentation box, alongside a numbered certificate of authenticity and a detailed information booklet.
