Available now: a 1986 gold proof 3-coin Sovereign set from the UK's national mint. This set includes a 1986 Commonwealth Games Two Pound or Double Sovereign, a 1986 'full' Sovereign and a 1986 Half Sovereign, all struck in 22-carat gold proof to standard specifications. The 1986 Two Pound was the first commemorative £2 ever issued by The Royal Mint, more than a decade before this denomination entered circulation as the bi-metallic coin we know today. The design celebrates the XIII Commonwealth Games, held in Edinburgh, Scotland, which welcomed 1,660 athletes from 27 different countries. The smaller gold coins in this set feature the classic St George and the dragon design, showing England's patron saint mounted on a rearing horse. This motif has been a perennial presence on Sovereigns since the coin was revived in 1817. The obverses of all three coins show Raphael Maklouf's third definitive coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, used on Her Majesty's money between 1985 and 1997. 12,500 of these 1986 three-coin sets were released by The Royal Mint as the only Sovereign set offered in that year. This edition is presented in its original case of issue, bound in red leather, with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed. The coins themselves are sealed in their original clear capsules. A key addition to any serious Sovereign collection.
