This complete Maundy Money set was presented to Mr James Mellor at Ribon Cathedral in April 1985. Mellor was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to Holy Trinity Church at Rothwell near Leeds. The set presented to Mr Mellor is comprised of a Five Pound note, a 1985 old-style larger Fifty Pence Piece and a clutch of .925 sterling silver Maundy Money coins, still sealed inside their original clear plastic packaging. There is 58p worth of Maundy coins, split between specially struck Fourpences, Threepences, Twopences and Pennies. Queen Elizabeth II was 58 years old in 1985. The traditional red and white leather purses used by Her Majesty to present the Royal Maundy are also included with this set. During The Queen’s reign Maundy Money was distributed at Anglican cathedrals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This ‘royal pilgrimage’ represented a new addition to a centuries old British ceremony, begun by Her Majesty. The Royal Mint - the UK’s national mint - does offer Maundy money sets to collectors this example was gifted as part of the annual event in 1985. A fascinating numismatic collectors piece.
