Buy a 1980 Proof Sovereign (Isle Of Man)

Gold proof 1980 Isle of Man Sovereign from the Pobjoy Mint, complete with Viking ship privy mark. This collector's coin features the typical Viking raider reverse design used on this series. The design depicts the warrior on horseback, sword raised, his steed rearing above a prone victim. The reverse owes something to the classic Saint George design on British Sovereigns, which served as the model for these Manx coins. Both are struck in 7.98 grams of solid 91.67% fine gold, in this case with a proof finish. Like their UK counterparts, these coins bear a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Pobjoy Mint issued a limited number of these proof Sovereigns in 1980, and this example is supplied in the original presentation case, complete with a certificate of authenticity.

Viking Raider Reverse Design

The reverse of this Manx coin depicts a Viking warrior, wielding his sword from a rearing horse, a reference to the classic Saint George Sovereign design. The date (1980) is shown below with a tiny triskeles in the border above.

Odin's Raven Privy Mark

The certificate that accompanies this coin describes the mintmark that appears below the horse as the 'Odins Raven' privy mark, but it looks like a Viking longship and is described as a 'Viking ship' in other sources.

Portrait Of Queen Elizabeth II

The obverse displays Arnold Machin's elegant head-and-shoulders portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, shown wearing a diadem. The simple inscription reads 'ISLE OF MAN ELIZABETH II'.

Struck In Solid 22-Carat Gold

Like standard British Sovereigns, these Manx coins are struck in 7.98 grams of solid 22-carat (91.67%) fine gold. These boxed proof editions, aimed at collectors, were issued alongside bullion investment coins and sets.

Pobjoy Mint Collectors Coin

Isle of Man Sovereigns are a product of The Pobjoy Mint, which issued a wide range of Isle of Man coinage. This 1980 coin is from a limited edition of 50,000 and is supplied in the original flocked red case with a certificate.
