Buy a 1905 Maundy Set

An attractive four-coin Maundy Money set from the reign of King Edward VII. This set comes in a modern blue presentation case and contains a 1905 Fourpence, Threepence, Twopence and Penny, each struck in .925 sterling silver. Edward VII came to the throne in 1901 following the death of his mother, Queen Victoria, and would reign until his own passing in 1910. Like his predecessor, Edward did not distribute coins to the elderly during annual Maundy Thursday services but delegated the job to a court official. British Royals would only revive the tradition of gifting Maundy Money in person in the 1930s. These coins are specially struck to a very old specification. Each bears the classic crowned numeral and oak wreath design to the reverse, attributed to engraver Jean Baptiste Merlen. The obverses show George William de Saulles' instantly recognisable right-facing coin portrait of the King. Grade: appealing rainbow toning, particularly to reverses: see photos. References: S 3985.
