Sterling silver Maundy Money set from the year 1900, complete with matched Royal Maundy 4p, 3p, 2p and 1p coins. These are the penultimate issue of Maundy coins made during the long reign of Queen Victoria who died in 1901. Victoria did not distribute the Royal Maundy herself: that tradition was restarted in the reign of King George V with modern British royals presenting purses of Maundy Money to recipients at Anglican Cathedrals up and down the UK. In 1900 the service was held in Westminster Abbey. The coins in this Victorian Maundy set feature the final 'Veiled' or 'Widowed Head' portrait of the Queen, the work of Sir Thomas Brock. The reverses show the classic crowned numeral design, surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves. This motif has had a long association with UK Maundy Money though this particular iteration was introduced in 1822, originally engraved by Jean Baptiste Merlen. The four coins in this set are presented in a modern red display case with 'MAUNDY MONEY' embossed in gold lettering to the lid.
