Complete Victorian Maundy Money coin set in a contemporary box. This four-coin set contains silver coins all dated 1870: a Maundy 1p, 2p, 3p and 4p. Maundy Money coins like this were designed for distribution at Maundy Thursday services as a gift from the reigning King or Queen to the elderly poor. In the past, the monarch would have distributed coins themselves, a tradition revived by British royals in the 20th century. Victoria delegated the job but Royal Maundy coins were struck with her image by the Royal Mint throughout her long reign. The pieces in this 1870 set all feature the beautiful Young Head effigy, originally engraved by William Wyon. The reverses show the classic crowned numeral design, attributed to Jean Baptiste Merlen, the date divided and surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves. These non-circulation coins are struck in .925 sterling silver to standard specifications and offered in an original Maundy Money case. This is lined with velvet and silk in a deep blue and features a working hook clasp. The coins inside are feature attractive toning and plenty of lustre. Grade: see photos. References: S3916.
