Complete early Victoria Maundy Money set, dated 1843. Old newspapers record the details of the Maundy Thursday ceremony in 1843 where recipients received food and clothing in addition to a gold Sovereign and silver Maundy coins, inside red and white purses. The practice of the monarch gifting money to the poor at Easter time dates back to the 1200s though the practice has evolved over the years. Today, British royals pass out the Royal Maundy in person but Queen Victoria delegated the task. This set includes an 1843 Fourpence, Threepence, Twopence and Penny, each struck in .925 sterling silver to standard specifications. These coins were never intended for circulation and remain much of their original lustre. The obverses feature the beautiful Young Head effigy, originally engraved by William Wyon. The reverses show the classic crowned numeral design, attributed to Jean Baptiste Merlen, the date divided and surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves. This 1843 Maundy Money set is offered in a modern, red leather presentation case. Grade: see photos. References: S 3916
