A 'fried egg error' coin is a type of minting error that affects bi-metallic coins like UK £1s and £2s, resulting in the silver-coloured inner disk appearing to leak out from the centre of the design, like the yolk of a runny egg.
During the minting process, the two parts of a bi-metallic coin, like a £1, £2 or €1, should become fused together, but when the parts are misaligned, a fried egg error can occur, though most examples are fairly minor.
This fried egg error appears on a 2015 Two Pound coin issued for circulation by The Royal Mint. This piece features the 'Technology' design, created for the first modern £2s, paired with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Many UK £2 and £1 coins show a minor fried egg error, where the design is not quite aligned properly. However, dramatic, obvious fried egg errors like this are very rare and seldom seen in circulation.
The Britannia Coin Company is the UK's leading retailer of modern error coins and rare releases from The Royal Mint. We buy and sell a wide range of scarce and sought-after coins, including 'fried egg' errors and other mint error coins.
