Fried egg error coins are popping up on Reddit and in national newspapers, but what are they? And are they really worth hundreds of pounds?

What Is A Fried Egg Error Coin?

The term 'fried egg error' is generally applied to bi-metallic UK £1 and £2 coins with an unusual minting error.

These coins feature an outer ring made from gold-coloured nickel-brass and an inner disc made from silver-coloured cupro-nickel. The inner disc is placed inside the outer rim before the coin is struck, fusing the two pieces together and imprinting the design. Coins are minted in this way as a security measure because it makes them difficult to counterfeit.

Fried egg errors occur during the manufacturing process when the two pieces are improperly sized or aligned. This results in the inner disc expanding further than it should, creating the appearance of a runny yolk spilling out of the inner rim, hence the name 'fried egg error'.

Sometimes the force of the strike pushes the central disc out of alignment entirely, resulting in a gap between the two parts of the coin or stress cracks across the outer rim.

Are Fried Egg Error Coins Rare?

Coins with minor fired egg errors are not rare.

Take a look at some of the Two Pound coins in your wallet and look at the ring of dots that runs around the join between the two parts of the coin - are they perfectly aligned? We bet you will find some that are slightly off-centre. Many UK £2 and £1 coins are released into circulation with a slight misalignment like this. While they could, technically, be called fried egg error coins, they are well within the tolerance of mass-produced circulating currency.

We have seen very ordinary, slightly misaligned coins described as 'very rare' by unscrupulous eBay sellers looking to prey on the unwary. This is not the case, and these coins are worth very little, not the thousands that they are listed for.

Many £1 and £2 coins are slightly misaligned, but this is very normal and does not make the coin rare or valuable.

Dramatic fried-egg-type error coins are rare.

We might describe a fried egg error coin as dramatic when it is significantly misaligned, resulting in the silver-coloured area extending towards the outer edge of the coin.

It is difficult to say how many significant fried egg error coins are in circulation, but they are not common. At The Britannia Coin Company, we handle thousands of bi-metallic coins every week, and we are lucky to see a serious fried egg error a couple of times a year.

What Are Fried Egg Error Coins Worth?

The value of fried egg error coins can vary widely depending on two key factors:

  • The severity of the error
  • The type and date of the coin

Coins with bold, well-defined errors tend to fetch higher prices. While minor examples might sell for just a few pounds above face value, more dramatic fried egg error coins can command significant premiums, with some examples selling on eBay for hundreds.

Most of the fried egg errors we have seen have affected definitive coins with standard circulating designs. This makes sense as these coins are produced in very large quantities: some mistakes will slip through the net. The error is less common on commemorative coins with special, one-year-only designs and even rarer on collectors' coins with a brilliant uncirculated or proof finish since these coins are subject to more serious quality control measures.
