Elizabeth II 1953-1967 Sixpences
The Royal Mint struck Sixpences throughout the early years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign, from the first issues in her coronation year to the last currency coin, struck in 1967. While the denomination was demonetised in 1980, Sixpences are still commonly found in old money boxes and coin collections.
Obverse Portrait By Mary Gillick
These coins feature Mary Gillick's instantly recognisable laureate portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on their obverse, together with a legend that reads '+ ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRATIA · REGINA'. 1953 Sixpences incorporate the words 'BRITT: OMN' in the inscription.
Rose, Shamrock, Thistle And Leek
Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas created the reverse design used on Elizabeth II Sixpences, which display national flowers representing the constituent nations of the United Kingdom: a rose (England), a thistle (Scotland), a shamrock (Northern Ireland) and a leek (Wales). The words 'FID · DEF ·' are shown above, with 'SIX PENCE ·' followed by the date below.

British Cupronickel Coins
During Queen Elizabeth II's reign, Sixpences were only struck in cupronickel alloy, though earlier in the century, these coins had been made of solid silver. Cupronickel has often been chosen for coin production because of its strength, resistance to corrosion, and affordability.
