Elizabeth II 1953-1967 Florins

Florins, also called Two Shillings, were minted for circulation throughout the early years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Despite being demonetised in 1993, Elizabeth II Florins remain sought-after by collectors of pre-decimal British coins.

First Portrait Of HM The Queen

These coins all feature Mary Gillick's elegant first coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, showing Her Majesty crowned with a wreath of laurel leaves. Most Elizabeth II Florins feature an obverse inscription that reads + ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRATIA · REGINA', though 1953 Florins also include the words 'BRITT: OMN'.

Final UK Florin Reverse Design

Elizabeth II Florins feature a distinctive Tudor rose design, surrounded by thistles, shamrocks and leeks, created by Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas. The words 'FID: DEF:' are inscribed above with the date to the right and 'TWO SHILLINGS' below.

British Cupronickel Coins

During Queen Elizabeth II's reign, Two Shillings were only struck in cupronickel alloy, though earlier in the century, these coins had been made of solid silver. Cupronickel is frequently chosen for coin production because of its strength, resistance to corrosion, and affordability.
