The BU Rosalind Franklin 50 Pence coin is the second release in the Royal Mint's 'Innovation in Science' coin series. This cupro-nickel edition celebrates the eminent British chemist Rosalind Franklin whose research is now widely credited with the discovery of the properties of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). She was an expert in X-ray crystallography, and when researching DNA at King's College London alongside Raymond Gosling she derived the famous photograph 51 image, from which a three-dimensional model of DNA could be determined. Upon leaving KCL in 1953, Franklin's colleague Maurice Wilkins passed photograph 51 to James Watson and Francis Crick, without her knowledge or permission. It proved to be the final puzzle piece for Watson and Crick in identifying the double-helix structure of DNA. It lead to the pair of them and Wilkins being jointly awarded the Noble Prize in 1962, four years after Franklin's death. Neither Franklin nor Gosling were cited as contributors, with Watson misrepresenting both of them in later years. The UK 50p features Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, paired with a reverse design by David Knapton. The reverse includes an acrostic combining Rosalind Franklin's name with DNA and a visual representation of photo 51. The collectable coin is struck twice to give a brilliant uncirculated finish, which is designed for collectors and offers a greater level of detail than their ordinary circulating counterparts. This 50 Pence weighs 8.00 grams, measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter and comes in an attractive limited edition slipcase.
