To celebrate the life and legacy of Stephen Hawking, The Royal Mint released a special series of Fifty Pence coins which is the first part of a new 'Innovation in Science' series. This UK coin is the brilliant uncirculated version. Stephen Hawking was a noted Cambridge physicist who brought physics and theories of the universe from the depths of academia to the public mainstream. His humour, intelligence and enthusiasm made science accessible and enjoyable. When he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease just after his 20th birthday, he was given a few years to live. Driven by his studies and relationships, Hawking defied the diagnosis and continued with his outstanding research. The coin features a black hole design in recognition of Hawking's discoveries on their workings. It was designed by Edwina Ellis who wanted to appeal to Hawking's sense of humour as well as his scientific achievements. The black hole is paired with Hawking's name and the entropy equation. On the coin's obverse side, Jody Clark's engraving of Queen Elizabeth II is visible. This is the fifth definitive portrait of the Queen used on British coinage. This collectable 50 Pence is presented in its original black and teal presentation folder, weighs 8.00 grams and measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter. You'll find interesting details on Hawking's life and his work on black holes on this limited edition packaging, which nicely complements this attractive UK coin.
