The rarest Strike Your Own! 2018 Royal Wedding £5 was struck on either Saturday 19 May or Sunday 20 May at The Royal Mint Experience.
As part of the tour, visitors can strike their own coin as a keepsake from their visit. Most 'Strike Your Own' designs are available for a few weeks, but this Prince Harry and Megan Markle design was in use for just two days during the weekend of their wedding at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.
Artist Jody Clark was granted a private sitting to create the portraits of Prince Harry and Megan Markle seen on the reverse. The words 'HARRY AND MEGAN' are shown below with 'ROYAL WEDDING · 19 MAY 2018' above.
Clark also designed the definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II seen on the obverse and used on British coinage from 2015 until her passing in 2022. The inscription reads 'ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · FID · DEF · 5 POUNDS ·'.
This Five Pound coin is made from cupronickel and has been struck to a brilliant uncirculated finish by a visitor to The Royal Mint Experience. BU coins have an all-over high shine finish and more detail than currency coins.
The Royal Mint publishes figures on exactly how many of each Strike Your Own coin were sold. From this, we know that the Harry & Megan £5 is by far the rarest, with just 482 struck during a two-day period: 19 to 20 May 2018.
While Strike Your Own BU coins are generally presented in cards today, this 2018 piece was supplied in a capsule, inside a cream drawstring pouch with a card certificate of authenticity enclosed.
