This Royal Mint BUnc commemorative Five Pound coin was released when Prince Philip retired from official royal duties in August 2017 at the age of 96. He was the longest serving royal consort in British history, having reportedly completed more than 22,000 solo engagements over the 65 years of his service to the nation. He acted as the president or patron of over 800 charities and impressively gave nearly 5,500 speeches during that time as well. His lifetime of service is celebrated with this cupro-nickel collectors piece, struck twice during production to give a brilliant uncirculated finish. It features a portrait of the Duke of Edinburgh, facing to the right, originally designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget in 1970. Paget is known by most numismatists for being the engraver who designed the coin effigys of King Edward VIII and King George VI. The Latin text underneath reads 'NON SIBI SED PATRIAE', which means 'not for self, but for country'. This is paired with the obverse, which shows his wife, Queen Elizabeth II. It's the fifth official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and was engraved by the Royal Mint artist, Jody Clark. The coin weighs 28.28 grams and has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. You'll receive your limited edition pre-owned coin complete in the original Royal Mint slipcase, which has been specifically designed for the brilliant uncirculated version.
