2016 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of celebrated children's author, Beatrix Potter. To mark the occasion, the Royal Mint released a Beatirix Potter Fifty Pence coin and a series of four 50p pieces depicting four of her most popular characters: Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Squirrel Nutkin, and this endearing portrait of beloved trouble-maker Peter Rabbit. This version is the brilliant uncirculated edition, issued in a collectable coin slipcase. It's the first ever UK coin to have Peter Rabbit on it, and was released to a massive amount of fanfare. Originally written as illustrated story letters for the children of her friend, and former governess, Beatrix Potter's stories were made all the more special by her watercolour illustrations and the immersive world she created. Peter Rabbit not only features in his own tales, but appeared in five other stories, such as The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, where he and his cousin adventure back into Mr McGregor's garden. She's best known for her 'Little Tales' but was also a respected mycologist, renowned for her watercolours of fungi. She invested her funds into buying and conserving land and property in her beloved Lake District, the majority of which was gifted to the National Trust after her death in 1943. On the reverse of this UK coin, Emma Noble's engraving of Peter Rabbit takes pride of place, and on the obverse Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II can be seen. This pre-owned 50 Pence coin comes encased in an informative slipcase and is struck in eight grams of cupro-nickel alloy. A must-have for any Beatrix Potter coin collector.
