1914 marked the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, and on the occasion The Royal Mint released a commemorative series of coins, including this brilliant uncirculated Two Pound piece. Also known as The Great War at the time, it was the first 'total' war and became infamously known for stalemate and incomprehensible numbers of casualties. Shortly after the declaration of war, Lord Kitchener was appointed Secretary of State for War and was credited with building one of the largest ever volunteer armies Britain had ever seen - The New Army. The enlistment poster of Field Marshall Kitchener appealing to British men that 'Your country needs you' is an iconic image of the First World War. It is this portrait that artist John Bergdahl used as inspiration for his design on the coin's reverse. Beneath the engraving of Field Marshall Kitchener is the famous saying 'YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU'. The inscription around the edge of this coin features the foreshadowing quote 'THE LAMPS ARE GOING OUT ALL OVER EUROPE', which was stated by Foreign Secretary Edward Grey on the outbreak of war. On the obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the fourth official UK coin portrait of the monarch. Specifications of the coin are a bimetallic alloy of cupronickel in the centre and a nickel-brass outer ring, a total diameter of 28.40 millimetres and a total weight of 12.00 grams. This pre-owned UK coin comes issued in the original limited edition packaging from The Royal Mint.
