To celebrate what would have been Christopher Ironside's 100th birthday, the Royal Mint issued a commemorative BUnc 50 Pence coin. Numismatists and coin collectors alike will recognise Ironside as the brains behind the reverse designs on the decimal pound sterling coins, which were adopted fully by the United Kingdom in February 1971. Shrouded in secrecy, Ironside won a competition in 1962 to design the new decimal coinage. While Arnold Machin won the obverse with his portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, Ironside was successful with his reverse designs. Originally, his royal arms design was deemed most attractive for the Fifty Pence to be released in 1969, but his Britannia design was ultimately chosen instead due to public opinion. However, the Mint's advisory committee liked the royal arms design so much that they did commission some trial pieces, and it fitting that it finally made its way onto a legal tender 50p coin in 2013. The royal arms design graces the reverse of the 50p along with the denomination and date. On the obverse is Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of the Queen, the fourth official effigy. Struck in cupro-nickel alloy and weighing eight grams, this UK 50p is issued in a limited edition coin slipcase with additional information about Christopher Ironside. A perfect gift for any coin collector in your life.
