The Royal Mint released a set of commemorative Fifty Pence coins in 2013 to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Britten. Born Edward Benjamin Britten in November 1913, he was blessed with musical talent from an early age and grew up to be one of the leading figures of British music in the 20th century, and perhaps the greatest English musician since the 17th century. Despite suffering ill health as a result of childhood pneumonia, he composed numerous masterpieces during his life. His legacy continues today with the Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts taking place every year in the town where Britten and his partner, Peter Pears, lived for many years. Designed by artist and composer Tom Phillips, the reverse of the coin features a row of musical staves. Lines from his works are featured above and below the lines of music. This striking design is paired on the obverse with Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the fourth official effigy to be used on UK coinage. Each 50p comes sealed in the original Royal Mint slipcase, which features a monochrome photograph of Baron Britten and information about his life and achievements. The coin weighs eight grams and measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter. A great opportunity to own a rare UK coin.
