2011 saw the 500th anniversary of the sinking of the Mary Rose, and The Royal Mint issued this brilliant uncirculated £2 coin to mark the occasion. The flagship of the Royal Navy was one of King Henry VIII's favourites, commissioned in the early sixteenth century as part of efforts to build a strong naval defence from French attacks, and win supremacy over the seas. The Mary Rose was a carrack-type warship, serving in several wars and was the first to carry cannons able to fire broadside from watertight gunports. Following refits in 1528 and 1536, she is thought to have become top-heavy, and with an inexperienced crew, the ship capsized and sank in the Solent in July 1545. The wreck was rediscovered in 1971 and raised from the seabed a decade later, the salvaged hull now on display at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The insight the Mary Rose provides into Tudor life has been invaluable to researchers and has captured the public imagination. On the reverse is an elaborate designed by John Bergdahl showing the vessel in full sail, the words 'THE MARY ROSE' above in a Tudor-style font and the denomination below, separated by Tudor roses. This is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to the obverse. On the edge, the lettering reads 'YOUR NOBLEST SHIPPE 1511'. This pre-owned cupro-nickel / nickel-brass coin weighs 12.00 grams and has a standard diameter of 28.40 millimetres. It comes in its original limited edition packaging which includes a protective capsule.
