2011 marked 400 years since the publication of one of the most important books in the history of English literature, the King James Version of the Bible. To commemorate this, the Royal Mint released a series of special edition Two Pound coins, with this version being the pre-owned brilliant uncirculated cupro-nickel coin. Also known as the Authorised Version of the Bible, it was commissioned by King James I of England during the Hampton Court Conference in 1604 and was first published 1611. By the middle of the 18th century, the King James Bible had become the unchallenged text used in church services across the country, which led to a profound influence on the English language, surpassing even that of Shakespeare. It stands out for its majesty of style and beautiful passages of English, with its poetical richness introducing phrases and idioms that are still used in modern language today. The reverse was jointly designed by Benjamin Wright and Paul Stafford and features the opening words of John 1:1: 'IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD'. On the left these words appear as printing blocks, while the right shows the printed page clearly in the original typeface of the first edition. On the other side, the obverse, the fourth official UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is visible, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Each coin weighs 12.00 grams and measures 28.40 millimetres in diameter. Included is a collectable slipcase in which the coin is housed, full of information on how the KJV of the Bible became a driving force in the shaping of the English-speaking world.
