The Royal Mint celebrated the 250th anniversary of the birth of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns with the release of several commemorative Two Pound coins in 2009. This pre-owned edition is the brilliant uncirculated version, struck twice during production to give a superior finish than conventional coins. Robert Burns was born in 1759 and is regarded as a pioneer of the romantic movement and a cultural icon of Scotland. His poetry was written in both English and Scots, with his most famous poem 'Auld Lang Syne' often sung at Hogmanay (the last day of the year). To this day, Burns Night is traditionally celebrated around the 25th January with haggis and recitation of Burns' poetry. On the coin's reverse, a line from Auld Lang Syne in Burns' handwriting is visible, which is the first commemorative coin to have a design based solely on handwriting. It was collectively designed by the Royal Mint engraving team. The edge inscription around the coin reads 'SHOULD AULD ACQUAINTANCE BE FORGOT', which is another line from the well-known poem. On the obverse, Ian Rank Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the fourth official UK coin portrait of Her Majesty. Specifications of the BU coin are a bimetallic alloy of cupronickel in the centre and a nickel-brass outer ring, a total diameter of 28.40 millimetres and a total weight of 12.00 grams. It comes issued in the original limited edition packaging from The Royal Mint.
