The great naturalist Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury in 1809 and went on to become one of the most influential scientists ever. This cupro-nickel 2009 brilliant uncirculated Two Pound coin from The Royal Mint celebrates 200 years since the birth of the father of evolutionary biology as well as the 150th anniversary of the publication of 'On the Origin of Species'. Darwin developed a great interest in natural history after being influenced by a botany professor at Cambridge, and in 1831 he was invited to be a naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle voyage to South America. On this five-year expedition, he sent numerous letters and journals back to his professor, which resulted in wider interest from academia. In 1859, following extensive research, he published his 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection' which sold out within a day and remains the underpinning thinking behind the theory of evolution. On the reverse, artist Suzie Zamit places the recognisable profile of Charles Darwin, with his large beard, facing that of a chimpanzee. This is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the coin's obverse, which is the fourth official UK coin image of Her Majesty. Specifications of this pre-owned UK coin are a BU finish, a weight of 12.00 grams and a diameter of 28.40 millimetres. It's issued in the original limited edition packaging from The Royal Mint. Suitable for all ages, this is the perfect gift for anybody interested in Charles Darwin and natural history.
