2009 was the 500th anniversary of the second Tudor monarch, King Henry VIII, ascending to the English throne and the Royal Mint marked the occasion with the issue of this BU Five Pound coin. One of England most famous and controversial Kings, Henry VIII is known best for his six marriages and his excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church, sparking the English Reformation. Although commonly believed to have divorced two of his wives, he actually had those marriages annulled. He's also known as 'the father of the Royal Navy', as England's fleet became a serious player on the seas on his watch. For the reverse design of this commemorative crown coin, John Bergdahl takes inspiration from the most famous portrait of the King, by Hans Holbein. Bergdahl places King Henry prominently in the centre, exactly as he was painted in Holbein's portrait, with an outline of a Tudor rose on the outside. This petal-shaped tressure which frames the King was used frequently on mediaeval coins to highlight important figures. Sharp-eyed observers will be able to spot the rope on the coin's rim, highlighting the Royal Navy link. The traditional design on the reverse is complemented by Ian Rank-Broadley's engraving of Queen Elizabeth II. The specifications of this pre-owned £5 coin are a weight of 28.28 grams, a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and a cupronickel alloy. The brilliant uncirculated finish gives the coin a finer appearance than any coin found in your change. It's housed in an informative limited edition slipcase - perfect for collectors.
