To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1908 Olympic Games held in London, the Royal Mint released a set of commemorative Two Pound coins, with this pre-owned edition being the brilliant uncirculated version struck in base metal. Rome was originally chosen to stage the Games of the IV Olympiad in 1908, but the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906 forced a move to London for financial reasons. The 1908 London Olympics are noted for being the longest in the modern era, officially lasting a staggering six months and four days. Olympic games have been standardised since 1992 to last 17 days. 22 National Olympic Committees competed in these games, with 110 events being contested. A purpose-built stadium in White City, London was constructed to host the games and was unfortunately demolished in 1985. London would again host the Olympics in 1948, just after the Second World War, and for a third time in 2012. On the reverse of this collectable UK coin is an outline of a running track, designed by Royal Mint engraver Thomas Docherty. The obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The inscription around the edge reads: 'THE 4TH OLYMPIAD LONDON'. Specifications of the coin are a bimetallic alloy of cupronickel in the centre and a nickel-brass outer ring, a total diameter of 28.40 millimetres and a total weight of 12.00 grams. It comes issued in the original limited edition packaging from The Royal Mint.
