In 2003, the Royal Mint commemorated the legacy of the Suffragette Movement with this 2003 BUnc 50p, which coincided with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Women's Social and Political Union. Founded in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst and her two daughters, Christabel and Sylvia, the WSPU campaigned for women's suffrage in the United Kingdom. It was the militant arm of the campaign for women's suffrage, contrasting to the non-violent National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, led by Milicent Garrett Fawcett. The WSPU members were known for their 'deeds not words' philosophy, pursuing direct action to achieve their goal, including criminal acts such as arson, breaking windows and bombing campaigns. Militant suffrage campaigns ceased with the declaration of war in September 1914. Limited enfranchisement for women came in 1918 and equal voting rights ten years later in 1928. In an echo of this history, the reverse shows a woman, chained to a railing, holding aloft a WSPU banner. A ballot sheet appears in front with the words 'GIVE WOMEN THE VOTE'. It was designed by Royal Mint engraver Mary Milner Dickens. The obverse shows the fourth official coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin weighs eight grams, measures 27.30 millimetres and is struck twice to give a brilliant uncirculated finish. You will receive the original Royal Mint packaging with your 50p coin, which includes a protective capsule built into the information folder.
