In 2003, the Royal Mint released several limited edition Two Pound coins to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of the properties of DNA, with this pre-owned edition being the brilliant uncirculated cupro-nickel version. Deoxyribonucleic Acid is the building block of biological life, and a number of scientists around the world were competing to scientifically prove their theories surrounding its existence. In 1953, Francis Crick and James Watson published their 900-word paper in Nature, a highly regarded scientific journal based in London. The two King's College London scientists had laid the foundations for further impressive and groundbreaking advances in molecular biology which have succeeded it, however their unauthorised use of x-ray diffraction data collected by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins continues to be an enduring controversy. The reverse shows John Mills' design of the DNA double helix spiralling across, with the strands of chromosomes and the letter notations for the four main components of DNA clearly visible. Ian Rank Broadley's engraving of Queen Elizabeth II is seen on the obverse, which is the fourth official portrait of the Queen on UK coinage. This Two Pound coin weighs 12.00 grams, has a diameter of 28.40 millimetres and is issued in the original limited edition packaging.
