Brilliant uncirculated Five Pound coin with a special mintmark! In anticipation of the world entering the third millennium AD, the Royal Mint released a selection of commemorative Five Pound coins in 1999. They complement the £5 coins issued the year after, which have precisely the same design except on the obverse with the year date 2000. This edition is the brilliant uncirculated coin with a conspicuous dome mintmark on the reverse, signifying that the coin was officially struck at the Millennium Dome in London. 27,546 of the ordinary BU issues were minted in 2000, but this edition was only sold at the Millennium Dome Experience exhibition and is much more tricky to get hold of for collectors. On the reverse, a simple yet striking clock design is visible, with the clock hands pointing to the very top of the coin, signifying midnight. On either side of the clock hands are the years 1999 and 2000, with an outline of the British Isles placed in the centre with the text 'ANNO DOMINI'. You'll see the clock hand pivot at Greenwich, which is the traditional centre of the worldwide time zone system. The Dome mintmark is visible beside the three o'clock mark. This clever engraving was the work of Jeffery Matthews, the noted stamp designer. The obverse shows the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley. William Shakespeare is quoted on the edge of the coin, with the raised lettering reading 'WHAT'S PAST IS PROLOGUE'. The cupro-nickel coin weighs 28.28 grams, has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and a fine silver weight of 0.841 troy ounces. You'll receive your limited edition pre-owned coin in the original Royal Mint presentation packaging which consists of an informative slipcase with a protective capsule built in.
