Commemorative UK Fifty Pence struck by The Royal Mint to celebrate public libraries. In 2000, the Public Libraries Act of 1850, offering citizens free access to the knowledge and enjoyment contained in books, turned 150 years old. This literary coin marks the date through a bookish reverse by sculptor Mary Milner Dickens. She depicts the turning pages of a book sitting atop a grand public library, which is also symbolic of the turn into a new millennium on this year. Ian Rank-Broadley's Elizabeth II portrait is found to the obverse side of this 8.00 gram cupronickel 50p. This celebration of a cultural and educational revolution measures 27.30 millimetres in diameter and holds a collectable brilliant uncirculated finish. Included is the thematic card folder, holding a history of the act and celebrating its enduring legacy up to the year 2000. A pre-owned UK coin marking a cultural cornerstone in UK society.
