The Royal Mint released a set of commemorative 50 Pence coins in 1998 to celebrate one of Britain's most well-known institutions: the National Health Service. The UK's publicly-funded healthcare system was launched in 1948 with three core principles: that it should meet the needs of all citizens, that care should be free at the point of delivery and that its services be based on clinical need. The architect of the scheme, which came into being as part of a raft of post-war social reforms, was Labour Health Minister, Aneurin Bevan. Today, the NHS sees more than a million patients a day and is the fifth largest employer in the world. The reverse of this Fifty Pence was designed by David Cornell. He's probably most famous among coin collectors for the £5 Crown he designed after the death of Princess Diana. His NHS reverse design shows light radiating from a pair of cupped hands. The words 'FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY' appear above with '50' between the hands and 'PENCE' below. The NHS logo appears five times around the top of the design. The obverse shows the official coin effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, appearing for the first time in 1998 and is the fourth official portrait of the Queen to appear on UK coinage. This 1998 50p weighs 8.00 grams, consists of cupronickel and comes in an attractive limited edition slipcase. It's struck to a brilliant uncirculated finish, imparting a level of detail and shine tthat you just won't find on the coins in your change.
