In 1983, The Royal Mint issued a brass-nickel £1 coin for the very first time. Its introduction coincided with the decline in use of the One Pound banknote, which was eventually withdrawn in 1988. It's a significant UK coin for a number of reasons, most notably for it being the first £1 coin minted for ordinary circulation since the disappearance of the gold sovereign from everyday monetary transactions in the First World War. In light of this, The Royal Mint commissioned a brilliant uncirculated version of the One Pound coin to be struck for the collector's market. The reverse design was engraved by the former Master of the Mint, Eric Sewell. He won a design competition for the coin and he used a masterful interpretation of the royal coat of arms. The nation's mottos 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE' and 'DIEU ET MON DROIT' are present, translating respectively as ''Shame on him who thinks evil of it' and God and my right'. An inscription is also seen on the coin's edge: 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN', which roughly translates to 'An ornament and a safeguard'. This is a nod to the era when this lettering was placed on coins to deter the practice of coin clipping. The traditional design of this coin continues on the obverse, which shows the second definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin. The UK coin is struck twice, giving it a brilliant uncirculated finish, and the specifications are a weight of 9.5 grams and a diameter of 22.5 millimetres. 484,900 coins were authorised to be released in this limited edition presentation from The Royal Mint.
