Buy Silver Krugerrands
The Krugerrand is the official bullion coin of South Africa and IS produced by the South African Mint in conjunction with the Rand Refinery. They are very popular with bullion collectors, being traded at price levels very closely associated with the live silver price.
In modern coin history, the Krugerrand is perhaps the most famous of all gold bullion coins, being introduced in 1967. But a silver edition wasn't available until 50 years later in 2017. The silver bullion Krugerrand is now issued every year by the South African Mint and is popular with both coin collectors and investors.
The 1oz silver Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of pure silver and measures 38.73 millimetres in diameter. Like other silver bullion coins such as the British Britannia and the American Eagle, they're composed of 0.999 fine silver.
Krugerrand Coin Range
Until 2017, The Krugerrand was an outlier in the bullion coin world for not having a silver counterpart for its gold coin edition. The Canadian Maple, Chinese Panda, British Britannia and American Eagle all released silver bullion editions of their respective coins years before South Africa did. Why the South African Mint took so long to issue a silver edition of the Krugerrand was puzzling, however they put that right on the Krugerrand's 50th anniversary by issuing a 'premium uncirculated' Silver Krugerrand and a platinum proof Krugerrand.
The Krugerrand family now boasts an extensive range of coins available in a selection of finishes. Additionally, Krugerrand sets are available which have either a combination of different-sized coins or a mixture of dates. Each coin follows the same design as the original 1967 gold one ounce Krugerrand.
1oz Silver Krugerrand Design Features
The design of the silver 1oz Krugerrand is a direct copy of its gold counterpart, which has been consistent since its introduction in 1967. The name is derived from a combination of Kruger and rand, the South African unit of currency. Paul Kruger (1825-1904) was President of the Boer Transvaal Republic from 1883 to 1900 and his effigy is depicted on the obverse of this bullion coin. The eponymous Kruger was one of the most important people in the history of 19th-century South Africa, and you can also find his effigy on Transvaal Republic coinage from 1892-1902.
The obverse (front, heads) shows an image of Paul Kruger with the Afrikaans and English words 'SUID-AFRICA SOUTH AFRICA'. The reverse shows the famous springbok, a medium sized antelope indigenous to South Africa and is a common symbol of the country. The inscription describes the weight, metal and monetary denomination: 'FYNSILWER 1OZ FINE SILVER R1', with the date and the words 'KRUGERRAND' placed along the top of the reverse.
1oz Silver Krugerrand Face Value
The most intriguing difference between the gold Krugerrand and the silver Krugerrand is the nominal monetary value. The South African Reserve Bank Act 1989 stated that the legal tender value of a gold Krugerrand was the melt value of the gold composed in it. So if the spot price of gold per troy ounce was 35,000 rand, then the face value of a 1oz gold Krugerrand was R35,000.
Contrast this with the silver Krugerrand, which formally has the monetary value of R1 inscribed on the reverse. This is in common with other bullion coins issued around the world, which have nominal monetary values far below the actual precious metal value contained within the coin.

Low VAT Silver
These silver Krugerrands are pre-owned. UK VAT law allow us to sell these collectable coins on something called the 'margin scheme', where VAT is only payable on our profit margin. New silver coins are taxable on their full price at the standard rate. But since pre-owned collectable coins have already been taxed at their full value, they're not required to have VAT levied on their full value again. This is similar to the market for second-hand vehicles. Coin collectors are therefore able to take advantage of lower prices on pre-owned coins compared to collectable coins sold new.
