£1,400.00
Attica, Greece. Athenian silver tetradrachm. Early transitional issue, dated 455-440 BC. Obverse features the classical head of Athena with helmet, earring and necklace. The reverse displays the owl of Athena, standing in a square recess with an olive sprig and a crescent moon. Struck in Attica, the historical region of Greece encompassing Athens, where Athenians emerged as one of the successful ancient civilisations. The ‘owl’ tetradrachm - known in the ancient world as ‘glaux’ - became the most widely used coin in the region and an instantly recognisable symbol of Athenian and Greek culture. This very attractive silver coin has been professional graded as Mint State and represents the very best of classical art. A piece to be admired and treasured.
