Freddie Mercury

Honouring the legendary Queen frontman, The Royal Mint's official Freddie Mercury coins feature a nod to his iconic Live Aid performance with an exclusive Music Legends design available in a range of finishes.

Music Legends: Freddie Mercury

This striking release in The Royal Mint's acclaimed Music Legends series pays tribute to one of the most magnetic and influential performers in music history: Freddie Mercury.

Celebrated globally as the charismatic frontman of Queen, Mercury's unmistakable voice, theatrical flamboyance and fearless creativity continue to shape music and popular culture decades after his final curtain call. His legacy endures through timeless anthems, genre-defying artistry and a devoted fanbase that spans continents and generations. This special release also marks 40 years since Queen's legendary 1985 Live Aid performance, a set widely considered one of the greatest live performances in rock history. That same year saw the release of Mr Bad Guy, Mercury's first and only solo studio album.

Produced in collaboration with Mercury Songs Ltd, this is the first officially licensed Freddie Mercury coin, joining a distinguished collection that began with Queen and has since honoured musical greats including Elton John, David Bowie and George Michael.

First Official Freddie Mercury Coin

This is the first time that Freddie Mercury has been immortalised on official UK coinage, making these coins highly desirable for both coin collectors and Queen fans alike.

The design was created by acclaimed freelance graphic artist Henry Gray, whose previous work includes several standout Royal Mint coins. Inspired by a dynamic mid-performance photograph captured by the celebrated rock photographer Denis O'Regan, the portrait bursts with Freddie's stage presence and energy. The design is rich with meaningful detail, including Freddie Mercury's authentic signature, a musical stave symbolising his extraordinary four-octave vocal range and studded detailing, echoing his iconic Live Aid jacket.

Adding a personal touch to this historic release, the first coin was struck by Freddie's sister, Kashmira Bulsara, who shared:

'Freddie would have been absolutely delighted to see himself honoured in this way … The coin perfectly captures his passion and the joy he brought to millions through his music.'

In a fitting act of generosity, The Royal Mint will present a gold proof coin to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the AIDS charity created in Freddie's honour. The coin will be auctioned to raise vital funds for people living with and impacted by HIV and AIDS.

The 2025 Freddie Mercury Range

As usual, this release in the Music Legends series offers coins in a range of sizes and finishes at price points to suit any collector, from the popular brilliant uncirculated edition to a premium gold proof coin of which just 30 have been authorised for release. Selected Freddie Mercury coins feature vivid colour-printed highlights, emphasising Freddie's unforgettable stage wardrobe and adding striking visual depth.

The ten-ounce coloured release is a new addition to the standard Music Legends lineup and was not available via The Royal Mint's website. The five-ounce coin is also an exclusive release.
