Launched in 1938, before the outbreak of the War, HMS Belfast was initially part of the naval blockade against Germany, then saw action escorting Arctic convoys, including playing an important role in the Battle of North Cape and the sinking of the German warship Scharnhorst. Later, HMS Belfast would support the Normandy Landings and would go on to see further combat in the Korean War. Today, HMS Belfast is a popular tourist attraction, moored on the River Thames and operated by the Imperial War Museums. The IWM has collaborated with The Royal Mint to create this collectable coin, which features a specially commissioned design showing HMS Belfast cutting through the waves.
