The first silver one ounce Krugerrand from the SA Mint with a special fifty-year mintmark on the reverse. Gold Krugerrands have been struck since 1967, and this special 2017 999 fine silver edition was introduced to mark the 50th anniversary of this influential South African bullion coin. Issued with a proof finish, this collector's piece features the same classic design as historic Krugerrands, with a portrait of Boer statesman Paul Kruger on the obverse, paired with a pronking springbok design on the reverse. The South African Mint authorised the release of 15,000 of these silver commemorative coins with the one-off privy mark in 2017. This pre-owned example is supplied in the original presentation case, complete with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

A historic portrait of Paul Kruger, originally by Otto Schultz features on the obverse of this 2017 silver coin, together with an inscription which reads 'SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA'.
The reverse displays the typical pronking springbok design, attributed to Coert Steynberg, with 'KRUGERRAND' above, 'FYNSILWER 1OZ FINE SILVER R1' below, the date (2017) on either side and a tiny, subtle '1967-2017 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY' mintmark in the field.
These South African collector's coins are struck in one troy ounce of 999 fine silver with a premium proof finish. Each 1oz silver Krugerrand is denominated at R1 and measures 38.73 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge.
The certificate with this coin indicates a limited edition of 15,000 pieces, but Hern reports a mintage of just 14,575 coins for this issue. Further 50th anniversary coins were issued in gold bullion and proof finishes.
This pre-owned 2017 coin is supplied in the original SA Mint packaging, which comprises an individual capsule, a presentation case, and a numbered certificate of authenticity.
