The 1997 Kangaroo is a sought-after release in this Royal Australian Mint series of 1oz silver coins. Reverse designer Horst Hahne is much to be thanked for this, as his drinking kangaroo, reflected in the surface of the rippling water, plays with the multiple design finishes on the coin. Here, the frosted and shiny elements are reversed on either side of the waterline. On the obverse side is the definitive coinage effigy of Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf. The coin is made with 1.00 troy ounce (31.103 grams) of pure silver and is struck in .999 alloy. Despite these competitive bullion specifications, the Silver Kangaroo series also flourishes in the collectors market due to their one-year-only nature and comparably small mintages. Queen Elizabeth II's third definitive effigy is pictured on the obverse of the 1997 Kangaroo. Her name - 'ELIZABETH II' - is inscribed opposite the country and year of mintage: 'AUSTRALIA 1997'.
