These sterling silver coins were issued late in Queen Victoria's long reign and feature a controversial portrait of Her Majesty, designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm. The so-called Jubilee Portrait was criticised in its day but is a realistic portrayal of Victoria in old age, taken from life, that is best appreciated on the large surface of a Crown-sized coin. 566,394 such Crowns were struck at the Royal Mint in 1891: a very low mintage for silver currency coin. Now highly collectable, these Crowns feature the classic Saint George and the dragon design on their reverse.
