The words 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:' encircle a portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse of these 1890 coins. This effigy, known as the Jubilee Head, is the work of Joseph Edgar Boehm, whose initials appear on the Queen's shoulder.
Benedetto Pistrucci's classic engraving of England's patron saint, St George, atop of rearing horse, pointing his sword at a prone dragon, is shown on the reverse of 1890 Crown coins with the date below and the artist's initials to the right.
Crowns were made from solid .925 sterling silver during the Victorian period. These large British coins measure 38.6 millimetres from milled edge to milled edge and weigh approximately 28.28 grams.
Records show that 997,862 silver Crowns were minted in the 1890 calendar year at the Royal Mint. While these coins did circulate, this figure is significantly lower than that of other currency coins issued in the same year.
British silver Crowns are an excellent focus for any coin collector, particularly those who appreciate the artistry that goes into coin engraving. The large surface of Crown coins allows stunning designs to be appreciated in all their glory.
